What is a Co-op?
A Co-op is a member-owned, member-controlled business organization that works
for the mutual benefit of its members. If you've ever done your banking at a credit
union, you've been part of a co-op! The Moscow Food Co-op operates according to
the seven Cooperative Principles. Rather than trying to maximize profits, we try
to maximize service to our members.
Why should I join?
We're committed to our local producers and vendors! By joining the Moscow Food
Co-op, you're supporting the community. By shopping at the Moscow Food Co-op,
you're getting a healthier bag of groceries.
Being a member of the Co-op means savings on your purchases. When you place
a special order on bulk items, you can receive a 10% discount off of the regular
retail price. Your Board of Directors is currently exploring other ideas on
how to increase the benefits of being a member.
But I don't have to pay to join a normal grocery store, so why should I join the
Co-op?
Actually, you DO pay. Supermarkets generally have a higher mark-up and larger overhead than
co-ops.
Besides, the Moscow Food Co-op is the only place to get items like organic
produce and meats.
How much does my membership cost, and what is that money used for?
Lifetime membership in the Moscow Food Co-op is $150, but this can be paid in
yearly installments of $10 per year for an individual, and $7 for each additional
adult in the household (we do not charge for children). Currently, we are also
offering a reduced rate of $5 per year for our senior members. Anyone can join.
Membership capital goes directly into the store, meaning that all equipment in our store was
purchased by our members. This allows us to make improvements to our store (to serve you
better!) without having to raise prices on goods.
So what else do I get for being a member?
Glad you asked! Members can earn discounts on groceries of up to 18% per week
by trading time. By volunteering, you increase the value of your investment by
helping keep operation costs down. Your gift of time to the Co-op community is
greatly appreciated. See the Volunteer Board in the front of the store for available
tasks and positions. There are also “member’s only” sale items. This group of
50 -60 items are selected each month to pass on savings to members from manufacturers.
Members also receive discounts throughout the Moscow business community through our
Business Partner program. Show your membership card and
support these businesses.
What do I have to do as a member?
Support our Co-op! Read the monthly Newsletter and see the Member Info board
at the front of the store to keep up with Co-op events. Let your Board
of Directors know what you want the Co-op to be doing.
